Parkland shooting survivor says his father now believes it was all a hoax because of QAnon

An 18-year-old who claims to be a survivor of the Parkland massacre says his own father now believes it was all a hoax after he started following QAnon on Twitter last year.

A recent graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, who called himself Bill on a Reddit forum called QanonCasualties, claimed that his father constantly accuses him and his friends of “paid pawns” in a grand conspiracy to gain support for the gun control laws.

He’ll say things like this right to my face when he drinks, ‘You’re a real piece of work to be able to sit here and pretend nothing ever happened if it wasn’t a hoax. Shame on you for being a part of it and helping your family through it too,” Bill said.

He added that his father continues to do this to test whether his son’s trauma is real.

Bill, who attended third university from the horrific shooting, said he wants to see the incident past now that he graduates, but his father’s taunts won’t allow him.

He said the breaking point was when he caught his little brother investigating the shootings on his iPad.

Bill said his father started tracking QAnon during the pandemic, VICE News reported.

“From there, it snowed into what it is today, believing that if the government is capable of overthrowing an election, everything else is probably a lie,” Bill said.

“Anything that contradicted his feelings was wrong,” he added. “So he turned to the internet to find like-minded people, which led him to QAnon.”

QAnon is an anonymous conspiracy theory group perpetuating ideas such as that President Donald Trump waged war on unseen crimes committed by corporate leaders and politics.

QAnon, along with 70,000 conspiracy theorist accounts, was banned from Twitter in January.

Bill explained that he was working hard to get past the survivors’ trauma and guilt he experienced when 17 students from the school were shot and killed on February 14, 2018.

The accused gunman Nikolas Cruz is expected to appear in court in September. Bill’s father has called Cruz “a radical commie actor.”

Bill feels like his progress has dwindled to zero as his father berates what he’s been through. Things only got worse when videos surfaced of Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green who repeatedly expressed support for QAnon and the harassment of shooting survivor David Hogg.

“He’s a coward,” Green told her followers of the outspoken Hogg.

On Wednesday, a video now shows Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (back left and right) following Parkland survivor and gun control activist David Hogg (left) around the Capitol Hill campus, chiding him for his support of gun control measures.

The congresswoman has previously said she no longer believes the shooting was staged.

Despite Greene’s change of mind, Bill said the damage was done to his father.

Bill said he plans to leave his father’s house and escape the toxic situation.

“I have options that will get me off for August, which I plan to do from now on,” Bill said. “I put it off because I felt stuck trying to ‘fix’ my father.”

He added that his relationship with his mother has also been damaged.

“The relationship with my mother depends on whether my father is there or not, because then it’s pretty much all about conspiracy theories,” Bill told VICE News. ‘[The relationship] was good but deteriorated quickly, [especially] after I told her that if she doesn’t stand firm, I’ll leave with no interest in seeing my father again.’

On the Reddit post, Bill received messages of support and another person claiming to be a survivor echoed a similar situation.

“He will never stop alone, because new theories and goalposts are always being moved,” Bill said. “I don’t know how to help someone who’s so far gone. My guess is limited internet access and lots of therapy. But even if there was hope that he would eventually come out, it wouldn’t make me change my mind that I never wanted to see him again. So it doesn’t really matter anymore.’
