Team USA’s Anna Hall finished fifth in the women’s heptathlon after running 2:04.39 in the final event, the 800m. Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam and Noor Vidts took gold and bronze respectively. Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson won silver.

The heptathlon is a grueling two-day, seven-event event that demands a variety of skills. Here’s how Hall performed in her pre-800m trials:

  • 100m hurdles: 13.36 seconds, finishing seventh overall in the discipline.

  • High jump: 1.89 metres, finishing third overall.

  • Shot put: 14.11 metres, finishing eighth overall.

  • 200m race: 23.89 seconds, finishing eighth overall.

  • Long jump: 5.93 metres, finishing 13th overall.

  • Javelin throw: 45.99 metres, personal best, finishing ninth overall.

The points she earned after seven events placed Hall in fifth place overall heading into the 800-meter final.

Even making it to the Olympics was a major victory for Hall, who suffered a broken foot at the 2021 Olympic trials and then underwent knee surgery earlier this year. But she bounced back from that adversity to win the heptathlon at the 2024 Olympic trials in June, sealing her ticket to Paris.

No American woman had won an Olympic heptathlon gold since Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who accomplished the feat in 1988 and 1992, in addition to a silver she won in 1984. Joyner-Kersee has been a mentor and confidant to Hall throughout her career.

“She’s been very supportive of me,” Hall said. he told NBC Sports in Junee. “It’s been just unreal. I need to be strong for her. How come she believes in me and I don’t believe in myself?”
