Almost as quickly as they arrived in Paris, the 2024 Summer Olympics are drawing to a close. It seems like just yesterday that Celine Dion’s surprise performance at the Eiffel Tower capped off a rain-soaked Opening Ceremony that saw athletes from around the world enter the games in a boat parade down the River Seine.

Highlights included incredible performances by stars like Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Noah Lyles and Stephen Curry for Team USA, as well as some big surprises, like the U.S. men’s gymnastics team taking home a bronze medal.

Controversies were also part of this year’s Games, including American gymnast Jordan Chiles losing her bronze medal in the floor exercise and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif taking gold after a gender controversy made headlines around the world in the middle of the Games.

The 2024 Paralympics are next on the Olympic calendar, scheduled for August 28 to September 8 in Paris. The next Winter Games will be held in Italy in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in February 2026, and the next Summer Olympics will be in Los Angeles in 2028.

Paris Mayor to hand over Olympic flag to Los Angeles Mayor

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will hand over the Olympic flag to another mayor during the closing ceremony in Los Angeles, led by Mayor Karen Bass. It is the first time that the Olympic flag will be passed from one mayor to another.

Hidalgo is the first woman elected mayor of Paris, a position she held in 2014. Bass was elected in 2022 as the first female mayor of Los Angeles and is also the city’s second Black mayor, joining Tom Bradley.

  • Gold medalists Katie Ledecky and Nick Mead were named U.S. flag bearers for the closing ceremony

Team USA announced Thursday that gold medal winners Katie Ledecky, a swimmer, and Nick Mead, a rower, will carry the flag at the upcoming Closing Ceremony.

Ledecky’s achievements at the 2024 Games have been phenomenal. She won four medals: two gold, one silver and one bronze. Her two golds came in individual events: the 1500m, in which she set an Olympic record and finished so far ahead of her competitors that they could be seen swimming in the background as she did her post-race interview; and the 800m, in which she won her fourth consecutive gold medal.

But there is more. Her Olympic haul stands at 14 medals: nine gold, four silver and one bronze. She is now the most decorated Olympic swimmer of all time, has more Olympic gold medals than any other swimmer in history and is tied with Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina on the list of Olympians with the most golds of all time.

Ledecky was emotional when teammate Robert Finke told her she had been chosen as Team USA’s flag bearer.
