Australia claimed an Olympic silver medal in a thrilling men’s K4 500m final, beaten by kayak sprint powerhouse Germany.

In a tied finish, the crew of Riley Fitzsimmons, Jackson Collins, Pierre van der Westhuyzen and Noah Havard finished second in a photo finish, with Spain in third.

Germany claimed their third consecutive title in the event, winning the race by 0.04 seconds over Australia, while the Spaniards finished 0.21 seconds behind the green and gold rowers.

Earlier, Australia’s women’s K4 crew of Ella Beere, Aly Bull, Alexandra Clarke and Yale Steinepreis came last in their final, won by New Zealand with veteran Lisa Carrington winning her sixth gold medal among an Olympic haul of nine.

This came after Australia’s Moesha Johnson won silver in the marathon swim in the River Seine.
