KJT still leads after five

Things are still looking up for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

The Briton continues to lead the heptathlon with five events already contested and only two left.

It seems that he is now mainly in the battle for gold with Nafi Thiam, and is likely to get a medal.

The next event is the most important, however: the javelin. Thiam loves the event, but Johnson-Thompson not so much.

GB to the final

That was too close for comfort for the Great Britain women, but they did qualify for the 4x400m final, finishing second in their heat.

Three minutes and 24.72 seconds is a decent time, to be fair to them. In fact, it’s the best of the season.

Now all they have to do is rest.

GB in action in the 4x400m relay

Great Britain are about to take to the track in the women’s 4x400m relay.

The British have some strong 400m runners, but are missing some of their big guns due to individual problems.

Can they do it?

There is no improvement for Thiam

Well, that’s not what Nafi Thiam would have wanted.

She does not improve her final jump, in fact, she jumps exactly the same distance of 6.41.

There is virtually nothing between the current champion and Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Now let’s move on to the next Javelin event!

‘KJT is still at it’

Jazmin Sawyers, British long jumper, BBC Radio 5 Live:

Katarina Johnson-Thompson can breathe a sigh of relief. It’s not the big jump she was hoping for, but it keeps her on the podium.

KJT improves in the final jump

Katarina Johnson-Thompson takes a deep breath as she prepares for her final jump.

The British woman waits a while before starting her race, her face showing how big this jump is.

There you go… and it’s a much better jump!

6.40 m, just one centimetre behind his rival Nafi Thiam.

Oh boy, did he need that jump to keep going in search of gold, and he got it.

Are the Lyles Olympics over?

While the heptathlon is underway, I thought I’d quickly talk about Noah Lyles.

After winning bronze last night, she revealed she had been suffering from Covid, which isn’t ideal really.

And well, it seems that their Games are over.

The Olympic men’s 100m champion tweeted that he thinks his Olympics are over after last night.

That means there will be no replacement for him…

Thiam makes a strong jump

Oooooo, Nafi Thiam just made a big leap.

She jumps 6.41 m, almost 40 cm more than Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

The importance of that jump could be enormous if the Briton cannot respond.

KJT jumps 6.04 m

It’s better, but it’s not fantastic.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson does not give up on her second attempt and only manages 6.04m.

She has the ability to jump well over 6.50, so she’s quite far from that for now.

She needs to nail her final jump.

Bad first jump for KJT

Eh… that’s a little strange.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson starts her run and prepares to jump off the board, but gives up in mid-air.

That means she only jumped 4.65m, but it was actually a big stride for her.

She smiles slightly before speaking to her coach, not seeming too stressed about it.

‘KJT and Thiam are in a similar situation’

Jazmin Sawyers, British long jumper, BBC Radio 5 Live:

This long jump is very important. Kat (Johnson-Thompson) and Nafi (Thiam) are in a similar position. If one of them can pull away in the long jump, that would be very important.

KJT leads with 48 points on day two

Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s dream of winning an Olympic medal could come true today.

After four events in yesterday’s heptathlon, the Team GB athlete holds a 48-point lead over Olympic champion Nafi Thiam.

With three events still to be played today, everything is still up for grabs.

Johnson-Thomspon is now at the Stade de France as she prepares for her first event of the day, the long jump.

She is good at long jump, so it is a big challenge for her.

Pardoe finishes sixth in 10km swim

If you’re just getting up, you’ve already missed some of the action.

The River Seine hosted the men’s 10km swimming event this morning with two Britons in action.

One of them was Hector Pardoe, who was seeking redemption after his withdrawal from the Tokyo race three years ago.

And he performed brilliantly.

After a grueling battle, Pardoe finished sixth in one of the most entertaining open water races in a long time.

Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Toby Robinson finished in 14th place.

It was a great advert for marathon swimming. If you managed to see some of it, it must have made you smile.

I don’t want to step into a dirty river anytime soon, though.

An eventful morning at the Stade de France

The Stade de France track is going to suffer a lot today.

As the ‘tough old man’ (Russ Cook) says, there will be a lot of ones and twos crashing into him.

The ones who will strike the blow will be several British athletes…

Katarina Johnson-Thompson continues her bid for heptathlon gold this morning with the long jump and javelin events before the 800m final tonight.

Not to be forgotten are Ben Pattison, Elliot Giles and Max Burgin in action in the semi-finals of the men’s 800m, while Cindy Sember will take to the track for the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles.

To finish the morning, Great Britain will compete in the 4x400m relay.

Phoar. I got tired just writing that.
