China was leading at the time according to the official table, which ranks nations primarily based on the number of golds they have won.
But the United States had won more medals overall.
Well, the United States finished the Games with 40 golds, double the number of any other nation except China.
China also won 40 golds, but fell 35 behind the Americans overall.
