The parents of a 24-year-old woman who was shot in a Wisconsin invasion, similar to the Jayme Closs case, have amputated their arms because of defensive wounds sustained during the attack.
Laile Vang was killed Sunday night when 33-year-old Ritchie German Jr. shot into his home in Lake Hallie with a gun.
German shot and wounded her parents, Teng and Mai Chang Vang, before killing the young woman and then aiming the gun at himself in their house.
He had previously shot three of his own family members, including his mother, brother, and eight-year-old cousin, in a Lafayette house about 16 km away.
Laile Vang was killed Sunday night and her parents, Teng and Mai Chang Vang, were seriously injured when Ritchie German Jr. attacked his home in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin with a shotgun.
The parents of Vang suffered serious defensive wounds during the attack and each had to have an arm amputated.
They stay in the hospital but are expected to survive.
Authorities said that four other people, including the three younger children of the couple, managed to hide in the house during the attack and were not injured.
Ritchie German Jr., 34, is believed to have killed three of his relatives and later killed a 24-year-old woman in another house in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin on Sunday.
German had driven the car outside the Vangs house and had left items behind, including handcuffs and a loaded gun clamp.
It led investigators to believe that he had intended to imitate Jayme Closs's deadly home invasion and abduction last October from her family's home just 40 miles away.
Jayme & # 39; s attacker Jake Patterson killed her parents in her house before she kidnapped the teenager and held her hostage for months before she managed to escape.
In both cases, the attackers used weapons to force their way home.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said researchers are working to establish a motive, but admitted that they may never know why German carried out the attacks on a family he did not know and his own relatives.
A few days before the attacks, German had sent unsolicited sexual texts to Laile Yang, but she apparently did not know him and answered: & Who is this? I don't know you & # 39 ;.
The sheriff said there was no evidence that German had ever met Vang.
Authorities said that four other people, including the three younger children of the Vang, could hide in the house during the attack and were not injured
Authorities said that German had exchanged text messages with Vang before her death, but she apparently did not know him. He had sent her a text message asking about a personal relationship, but she is texting & back 39 who is this? I don't know you & # 39;
Authorities are now browsing about 10 mobile phones and trying to figure out how German got the Vang phone number, but they suspect he may have got it online.
A GoFundMe page set up for the Vang family on Tuesday describes the murdered woman as a & # 39; beautiful soul & # 39; and the & # 39; glue that held her family together & # 39 ;.
& # 39; She was the big sister where everyone asked for advice. She was the daughter who helped her parents with bills and chores. She was the friend who always offered a hand and a listening ear, & # 39; was on the page.
& # 39; She was nice to everyone, always smiling and never cruel. She took life one day at a time. She enjoyed traveling around the world, eating good food, taking photos and listening to good music. & # 39;
Meanwhile, German was described as a loner who was often unemployed and who occasionally lived in the Lafayette house where he killed his mother, Bridget German, 66; his brother, Douglas German, 32; and the 8-year-old son of his brother, Calvin Harris.
All three were shot in the head with a gun.
The sheriff said German had called the supermarket where his mother worked on Saturday morning and said she was sick at the hospital.
Researchers believe that the death of the woman is similar to the kidnapping of 13-year-old Jayme Closs from her family's home in Barron in October last year. Jayme & # 39; s attacker Jake Patterson killed her parents in their home before kidnapping the teenager
German used a shotgun to shoot into the house of the 24-year-old woman at Lake Hallie around 10.30 pm before shooting and injuring her parents. He then took his own life into the house
A neighbor boy who was playing with Calvin had also knocked on the door and asked if he was home, but German told him that his cousin was shopping with his grandmother.
The police found the bodies of his three family members only after she had first investigated the killing of the young woman.
They had gone to the house to tell them that German had taken his own life in the other attack.
The attacker's father, Ritchie German Sr., told the Star Tribune that he was shocked to hear of the murders and that his son had struggled with a mental illness – possibly bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
He said his son lived with him from 2005 to 2014 and during that time worked for only one year in a Menards warehouse.
He said his son stayed in his bedroom most of his time.
& # 39; I told his mother to help him & # 39 ;, said the German Sr., who had been alienated from his wife since his divorce in 2015.
German Sr. said his son once pulled a shotgun on his brother in about 2005 or 2006, but no one was hurt.
He was sentenced to probation after being released from prison by his father.
