The parents of a toddler who suffered life-threatening injuries when she plummeted 40ft from her bedroom window in an apartment building were arrested last night on suspicion of neglect.
The two-year-old girl had to be taken to hospital by plane after falling from her third-floor window on Thursday evening.
She fought for life, but was today considered to be in a “serious but stable” state.

Witnesses said they heard a ‘loud thud’ after the girl landed on the doorstep in front of the apartment complex in Portsmouth, Hampshire
Hampshire police later arrested a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman on suspicion of child neglect and were questioned last night regarding the Portsmouth accident on Thursday evening.
Residents of the five-story building described how they heard a ‘huge thump’ when the two-year-old girl fell and that her mother was ‘hysterical’ while her father came to her rescue while she was seriously injured on the street.
Neighbors said they understood that the cot in the flat is close to the window leading to the fall.
Eyewitness Emma Reilly, 31, said a metal phone junction box on the street below broke her fall and if it weren’t, the toddler would ‘surely have died.’
Mrs. Reilly, who lives on the block, said, “I heard a huge thump from the outside and at first I thought someone had been run over.
“But when I looked down from my window, I saw the baby lying on the floor.
“It was horrible to watch.
“She is such a sweet and sweet little girl, always so happy and smiling.
Specialized forensic investigators examined the site after the child was rushed to hospital
“There were actually two ponies, one was hitting the green metal box and the other the street.
“If she hadn’t hit that box, she sure would have died.
“Her face was huge because it was so swollen, she had a big black eye and on the spot we were told she had a broken jaw.
“She fell right in front of two 13-year-old boys – they must be so shocked.”
Karen Marsh, 54, rushed to the rescue and said she was “hysterical.”
Mrs. Marsh said, “She was in total shock, she was hysterical.
“I told her to get some clothes for the hospital.
“That poor woman, it’s really awful. It put me in total shock mode and I just wanted to help.
“She kept asking,” will she be okay? Will she be okay? ”
A neighbor said the girl hit a green metal box before landing on the sidewalk
A police spokesman said, “The girl is currently being treated at Southampton General Hospital, where her condition is now described as serious but stable.
‘Our investigations into the exact circumstances are currently underway.
“We can confirm that a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both from Portsmouth, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect to cause unnecessary suffering / injury.”
The pair were also arrested for possession of a weapon for discharging a harmful liquid / gas / electricity shutdown device and possession of a class B drug.
