Pakistan PM names Lt Gen Asim Munir as new army chief: Minister

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the new head of the army.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced the appointment on Twitter on Thursday, ending weeks of speculation over what some are calling the most powerful post in the South Asian nation.

Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad will take over as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, it added.

The current head of the army, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, will finish his six-year term on November 29.

Prime Minister Sharif held a cabinet meeting early Thursday in which he selected Munir from a list of six candidates for the top military post.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the two names had been sent for approval to President Arif Alvi, who is also the Supreme Commander of Pakistan’s armed forces.
