Whitehall heavyweights Sir Sajid Javid and Sir Charles Roxburgh have reportedly been sounded out for the role of chairman of lender Standard Chartered.

The UK-listed bank, which focuses on Asia and is valued at £16bn, is looking to replace José Viñals when he steps down. Spencer Stuart, the executive recruiting firm, has been gauging interest, according to the Financial Times.

The role could mean overseeing the succession process for Chief Executive Bill Winters, the longest-serving boss at a major British bank who has led the lender since 2015.

Former banker Javid, who was briefly chancellor during Boris Johnson’s government, served as home secretary and health secretary. He has not commented on Standard Chartered’s role.

Roxburgh served as second permanent secretary in charge of financial services from 2016 to 2022.

He represented the Treasury on the Bank of England’s financial policy committee. She also declined to comment.
