Barcelona have announced that Ousmane Dembele has signed a new contract until the summer of 2024, putting an end to months of transfer speculation.
The 25-year-old, who was a free agent for a short time, saw his original deal with the Catalan giants expire at the end of last month.
The news will be a major blow to Chelsea, who have been targeting the Frenchman this summer to bolster their attacking options.
Barcelona have announced that Ousmane Dembélé has agreed a new contract until 2024
The club and the player had been discussing a new deal for months, but they struggled to come to an agreement. As a result, his contract expired on June 30.
However, despite being a free agent, Dembele had little interest from other clubs and subsequently returned to the negotiating table with Barcelona.
Boss Xavi has always made wingers his absolute priority since he took over from Ronald Koeman last season.
He has fought for Dembele to stay when other voices at the club have wanted him to leave.
He even insisted on picking him if there were people at the club who wanted to sideline him to force his hand to sign a new deal.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Twitter earlier today that paperwork was done for a new two-year contract and that the Catalan giants will reveal the news later in the day.
His tweet read: ‘Paperworks completed for Ousmane Dembélé: new contract signed until June 2024, official statement and unveiling with Barcelona scheduled for later today.
“Xavi wanted both Dembele and Raphinha… he will end up with both Dembele and Raphinha.”
Dembele originally joined the LaLiga giants in a blockbuster transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
The French winger made 150 appearances despite suffering numerous injuries during his five-year spell at the Nou Camp.
