The fantastic four: first steps

Could the third time be the charm for the Fantastic Four? That’s what fans wonder about this team of superheroes, who seem to be cursed when it comes to film adaptations of their works. In 2005, we had Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans, pre-Captain America, as the quartet; Ten years later, it was Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell. For The fantastic four: first stepsthe cast is certainly impressive: Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. But perhaps the missing ingredient in previous versions has been the creative force behind the camera, which in this case is Matt Shakman, best known for his television career, where he has directed episodes of game of Thrones, WandaVision, the big oneand, more prolifically, more than 40 installments of It’s always sunny in Philadelphiaincluding fan favorite “The Nightman Cometh.”

Just because we have no idea what Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film is about doesn’t mean we’re not eager to find out more. Especially based on what we do know it. The bride!

Like a more independent Greta Gerwig, actress-turned-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal has been quietly building an impressive filmography behind the camera. Five years after getting an Oscar nomination (the second) in 2022 for Best Adapted Screenplay for The lost daughterGyllenhaal follows that film and jumps on the Universal Monster Movie bandwagon with this new version of Bride of Frankensteinto which the screenwriter and director intends to provide a strong feminist sensitivity. The film will reunite Gyllenhaal with Jessie Buckley, whom he directed and earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The lost daughter and here she plays the eponymous wife of Frankenstein’s monster, who will be played by Christian Bale, reuniting Gyllenhaal with his ex Ordinance co-star. Maggie’s brother Jake and her husband Peter Sarsgaard will also appear. Although there is already an official date for the premiere of Guillermo del Toro frankensteinstarring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi and Mia Goth, has yet to be announced, it seems like this pair of films could become a great mini-marathon.

Bugonia

Would it really be a true year for cinema if we didn’t have at least one absurd comedy from Yorgos Lanthimos? (The answer: no.) Avatar: Fire and Ash

It doesn’t matter how much time passes, or how much the original loses. Avatar seems to disappear from the cultural conversation, there’s no denying that James Cameron’s blue people know how to put cigarette butts in seats. Even though it seemed like the second film in the series didn’t generate much hype upon its release, nor did it receive an overwhelming amount of positive feedback, The path of water It somehow made enough money ($2.3 billion and some change) to secure its place as the third highest-grossing film of all time. Titanic up to #4 and located just below the original Avatar (2009) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). From what we know about the film, the “Ash” of the title refers to a much less kind group of Na’vi who are changing everything we know about Pandora.

one year later oppenheimer (and the Barbenheimer phenomenon) made Cillian Murphy one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, the Irish actor returns to his roots.
