Osprey hooker Ifan Phillips is being treated for ‘life-changing injuries’ after being involved in a serious traffic accident.

Phillips is in stable condition and is being treated at Morriston Hospital. The incident took place in Swansea on Sunday.

The son of former Wales and Neath player Kevin Phillips, the 25-year-old has played 40 games for the Ospreys and is a Wales Under-20 international.

A statement from Ospreys said: ‘The Ospreys can confirm that hooker Ifan Phillips was involved in a serious traffic accident in Swansea on Sunday afternoon and is now being treated at Morriston Hospital.

“Ifan is in stable condition and he is at the top of the minds of all of us at the Ospreys.

“On behalf of his teammates, coaches, staff, all Ospreys supporters and the rugby community, we would like to express our full support to Ifan, his family and his friends.

“The family is overwhelmed and very grateful for the support they have received over the past few days.

“The Ospreys ask that Ifan and his family be given privacy during this difficult time.”

Phillips’ ‘life-changing’ injuries were caused by a collision between two motorcycles.

South Wales Police have called witnesses and the incident took place between a green Triumph Street Scrambler and a Kawasaki.

They said: ‘Officers are seeking witnesses following a serious road accident which occurred at about 1.38pm on Sunday 5 December 2021 on the B4603, Morfa Road, Landore, Swansea, opposite Landore Social Club.

“Two motorcycles were involved in the collision, a green Triumph Street Scrambler and a Kawasaki.

One rider was taken to hospital where he remains and is being treated for life-altering injuries.

“The road was closed for several hours while the investigation continued and we thank everyone involved for their patience.

“We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage, anyone who stopped to provide assistance or anyone who saw the bikes prior to the collision.

A crowdfunding page was set up for Phillips with the aim of raising £10,000 for his rehabilitation. So far just under € 7,500 has been donated.

He signed a new contract with Ospreys earlier this year after impressing head coach Toby Booth, and he also trained with Wales last summer.

Ospreys’ regional rivals, the Dragons, Cardiff and Scarlets, all offered their support.

The Dragons tweeted: ‘All of us @dragonsrugby’s thoughts are with Ifan, his friends and family at this difficult time.

“Be careful, stay strong, we will support you in every way possible.”

Cardiff tweeted: ‘Thoughts are with Ifan, his family and everyone at the Ospreys at this difficult time. If we can help you with anything, you know where we are.’

The Scarlets said on Twitter: “All of us at @scarlets rugby are currently on Ifan and his family, as well as teammates and colleagues at the Ospreys.”
