McLaren’s Lando Norris took his first F1 victory with a sensational victory at Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, while Australian teammate Oscar Piastri’s career was ruined by an accident.
Norris started fifth, with his speedy team-mate Piastri the McLaren driver who looked most likely to upset the field, but a safety car at the halfway mark suited the Briton well.
During the safety flags, Norris entered the pits and emerged in the lead with a safety car that slowed the rest of the field.
Despite the attack from Max Verstappen, the Briton drove calmly to claim the checkered flag, with Verstappen in second and Charles Leclerc in third.

Norris finished ahead of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in third place.
Piastri finished well outside the points in 13th place after a collision with Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz.
The Australian was in third position at the end of the first lap and looked like he could make the podium, but he damaged his front wing and was forced to pit to replace it.
Daniel Ricciardo’s race was also affected by the safety car and he eventually finished in 15th position.
Norris is the 21st British competitor to win a Formula One race and the first McLaren driver to win since Australian Daniel Ricciardo won the Italian Grand Prix in 2021.
“It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally been able to do it,” he said.
‘I’m very happy for my entire team, I finally fulfilled their promise.
“Long day, tough race, but I finally made it to the top, so I’m delighted.”

F1 commentators praised the champion.
“It’s not a crazy wet race. He’s beaten both Ferraris, both Red Bulls fairly. That’s what will be most satisfying about this victory,” said Martin Brundle on Sky Sports.
Danica Patrick added: “He has the personality of a champion.” He’s fast, confident and fun. “You just get the feeling that one day he’s going to win a championship.”
