Orlando Bloom shares a 1998 photo of himself in a back brace after falling from THREE floors and ‘barely escaped death and paralysis’
Orlando Bloom is ‘grateful’ to be alive after he ‘barely escaped death’ following a spinal cord injury in 1998.
The Carnival Row star, 44, ‘crushed’ his spine in a nasty injury in 1998 when he fell three stories off a building, and has shared a photo taken a few months after the incident as he recalls the dangerous time.
He wrote on Instagram on Friday: “That’s me in my back brace, circa 1998, about 3 months after I fell from 3 floors and shattered my spine, narrowly escaping death and paralysis … grateful every day for my limbs that kept me in allow me to push my limits and live on my edge (now safer)’.

Orlando previously spoke about the incident in 2005, when he said he was climbing to a roof terrace when the drainpipe he was holding collapsed.
He told GQ: ‘Until then I didn’t have a healthy appreciation for life and death – that we are not invincible. And for four days I was faced with the idea of living in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I went to some dark places in my mind. I realized that I’m either going to walk again or not.
“The doctor said he wasn’t sure how severe the spinal cord damage was. I remember him telling me that and staring at the ceiling, thinking, I’ve never stared at ceilings before! And I wonder if I’ll spend the rest of my life looking at ceilings.’
And although the Pirates of the Caribbean star only spent a few weeks in the hospital, the accident changed his outlook on life.

He added: ‘When I got out of the hospital, I immediately started partying – with the back brace on. It took me a few months to realize this was my life, and I didn’t want to mess it up.
“But that accident changed everything in my life. Until you almost lose it, you don’t realize it. I rode motorcycles and cars like everything was a racetrack; it was ridiculous. It wasn’t because I thought it was cool; it was just because I loved living on the edge. But I’m cold.’

Katy gushed about Orlando’s relationship with his eldest when she said, “I was able to see him and his fatherhood.
“The way he showed up for him and continues to show up for him, and the effort he puts in and the distance he travels, I think is one of the reasons I made that conscious decision.
“I was like, ‘Here’s the father of my future children.’ I could see his kindness, empathy, caring and tenderness. I pleaded for that. I thought, “Okay, this is different.”
“And this is his first girl, so it’s a very different feeling for him. I am really very grateful to have it. And he shows himself really emotionally, which is unique for me.’
