Oprah Winfrey has announced that a mental health TV series she developed with Prince Harry will air this month after reports that the project had suffered several delays.

The series, which will focus on ‘mental illness and mental well-being’, has been several years in the making and was mentioned by Oprah, 67, during her two-hour bombshell interview with Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39.

Oprah stopped the series again during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show this week along with American psychiatrist Dr. Bruce D. Perry, who is also involved in the series.

She said, ‘I just want to say that Dr. Perry and I have also worked with Prince Harry and Apple for the past two years on this mental health series that will be released on Apple in May. ”

Harry is credited as a ‘co-partner, co-creator and executive producer’ of the as-yet-untitled series on mental health, which was first announced in April 2019.

A report from the Sun In January, it suggested the series was originally scheduled to air in the fall of 2020, but the limitations of Covid-19 and Harry’s departure from the Royal Family and moving to the US with Meghan Markle, 39, delayed production.

In a 2019 interview with best friend Gayle King, Oprah revealed exactly how the project came about, explaining that she pitched the idea to Prince Harry during a discussion of global issues.

‘I asked [Prince Harry] the question, “What do you think are the main problems facing the world today?” and he said there are two, ”said the daytime TV queen.

“He said climate change and mental well-being, mental fitness and mental health.”

She continued: “As you know, he talked about his own problems and what he went through after his mother died and how he benefited from talking about it.

So it’s a passion of his and at the end of the conversation I said, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this with Apple. It’s also a big concern of mine and I want to try to erase the stigma, ‘and he said at the end of the conversation,’ If there’s anything I can do to help. ”

It was then that Oprah decided to pitch the idea that Harry would work with her on the Apple project, with the TV titan revealing that the Royal Family has been incredibly involved in building the series since signing.

Referring to the series during her sit-down with the Sussexes, Oprah said to the camera, “Harry and I are working on this mental health series for Apple.”

The ‘plug’ for the documentary came about an hour after the interview, moments after Meghan revealed she had contemplated suicide in the depths of her feud with the Royals.

“I just didn’t want to live anymore,” said the Duchess. “And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

Meghan added that while smiling in public, she was terrified inside – noting how the pair held hands in a happy-looking photo at a public event of the time.

Oprah had already forged a close friendship with the royals prior to her business partnership with Harry.

The partnership was a huge win for Apple, which has reportedly already signed Oprah to a multi-year content deal, including scripted and unscripted original TV content, podcasts, books and apps.

In a statement released when the Apple show was announced, Harry said, “ I truly believe that good mental health – mental fitness – is the key to strong leadership, productive communities and a purposeful self. It is a huge responsibility to do this right as we bring you the facts, science and awareness of a topic so relevant in these times.

We hope this series will be positive, enlightening and inclusive – we share global stories of an unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to better understand ourselves and those around us. I am incredibly proud to be working on this vital series with Oprah. ‘
