Emergency crews responded to the scene according to the San Francisco Department of Emergency Services, with officials saying among the injured were bystanders and others involved in the chase.

Footage from the scene showed the mangled remains of two vehicles that had apparently hit a bus stop – debris could also be seen strewn across the busy intersection of 16th Street and Potrero Avenue.

San Francisco Fire Department Jonathon Baxter said Crown 4 that a “total of five casualties ranging from critical to serious condition” were reported.

Your New Barber owner Hector Martinez saw the aftermath of the accident and told missionlocal.com that first responders attempted to resuscitate the deceased for 10 minutes, but were unsuccessful.

“It almost felt like an explosion,” he said. “I ran outside and saw the chaos.”

Martinez added that as soon as he got out, the suspect was sitting near the destroyed bus stop, handcuffed.

He was arrested at the scene after a “physical struggle” and was taken to hospital, according to the outlet.

A vehicle matching the description was located near Kansas and 25th Street and led police in pursuit.
