One man has died and another is in a critical condition after a quad bike overturned in the Hunter region of New South Wales.

About 7pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to a fire trail in Cooranbong, west of Morriset on Lake Macquarie, following reports that a two-seater all-terrain vehicle (ATV) had crashed.

The passenger, a 35-year-old man, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The driver, a 30-year-old man, was treated at the scene and remains in critical condition in hospital.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.
