A child has died and 10 other people have been injured in a horrific car crash in the Northern Territory.

On Sunday, shortly before 11am, a Toyota Prado with 11 passengers crashed on the Mardiyardu Road, located between the northern towns of Kalkarindji and Lajamanu.

The car was driven back to Kalkarindji where a CareFlight team was waiting to assist, Northern Territory Police said.

The eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead shortly after.

A 29-year-old woman was reportedly driving the car when it crashed. She and ten others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said the crash was believed to be alcohol-related.

“Communications from the crash site were limited due to the remote location of the crash, and lead crash investigators are currently at both scenes,” he said on Monday.

‘This is a complex accident involving alcohol and a large number of unbelted passengers, which tragically resulted in the death of a small child.’

“Local police are providing support to affected families and local communities.”

Officers have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and have urged anyone with information to contact police.
