A horrific injury brought the women’s hockey semi-final to a halt in worrying scenes at the Olympics.
Joosje Burg of the Netherlands was a couple of feet away from her opponent when a powerful shot struck her in the face during her nation’s decisive clash with Argentina on Wednesday.
Blood quickly poured from the 27-year-old’s head and she lay motionless on the ground as her teammates and medical staff rushed to attend to her.
The Eurosport television channel decided not to show Burg on the ground, such was the severity of the injury.
Staff put bandages on his nose to stop the bleeding and play was halted for more than five minutes.
Burg eventually stood up and, with the help of four medical staff members, was able to walk off the field.
But play did not resume immediately as efforts were made to clean up the blood that had fallen onto the pitch.
“You have to try and stop the blood flow,” said the Eurosport commentary team. “There’s a lot of blood there.”

The beautiful Dutch woman Burg, 27, lay motionless on the ground for five minutes.
She was treated and returned to play as the Netherlands won 3-0.
In incredible scenes, the brave 27-year-old returned to the game after being treated on the sidelines but was not allowed to wear her blood-covered shirt so donned a replacement.
The new shirt did not have a number on the back, so Dutch officials reacted quickly and created a number out of tape so the referee could identify it.
The Netherlands continued to fight for their teammate and won 3-0 in Paris.
The all-conquering Dutch team will face either Belgium or China in the gold medal match, the sixth consecutive time they have competed in the final.
