Olli Hoare has deleted his Instagram account after suffering vile online abuse following his 1500m performance in Paris.

Australian track star Hoare failed to reach the semi-finals after finishing a disappointing third in her heat, before crashing out in the repechage round, ending her Olympic dream.

In a candid interview, Hoare said the negative messages he received ahead of the repechage round had a huge impact on his mindset heading into the race.

“My Instagram has been really bad after that (the heat),” the Commonwealth Games gold medallist said.

‘It was a terrible race and I got insulted on Instagram so I had to delete it.

I probably should have deleted Instagram before I went to town, but I miss my friends. It’s an easy way to communicate when you’re not living at home.

“It was really hard. I think it affected me a bit. I haven’t been able to sleep well.”

The Sydney-born runner said his teammate was also targeted by vile trolls.

“If I have a bad race or something goes wrong, there could be a chance that that could happen and I just have to tell him to go fuck himself,” he said.

‘They don’t know that I couldn’t walk in November, they don’t know what many athletes go through and sometimes it’s their day, sometimes it’s not.’

Hoare said he had confidence issues when travelling to France.

“I don’t feel confident, I’ve run 3:31 twice (in 2024), I’ve won a Diamond League, but I still don’t feel confident. I don’t know what’s going on.”
