Olympic gold medalist Ariarne Titmus has opened up about her fear of cancer while modeling Australia’s uniform for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

The Australian took gold in the 200 and 400m freestyle at the delayed 2021 Tokyo Games, beating her American rival Katie Ledecky and adding silver in the 800m.

Summer McIntosh has since emerged, although Titmus regained the 400m world record from the Canadian last year to set up a spicy three-way rivalry in the Paris pool from July.

Compatriot Mollie O’Callaghan beat Titmus in world record time to win 200m gold at the 2023 world championships, where she became the first woman to win the 100-200m freestyle double.

Titmus, 23, suffered a two-month training hiatus last year after she underwent surgery to remove benign tumors from an ovary, discovered by chance during an MRI scan on a sore hip.

“At the time of recovery, I was very worried,” she told AAP at Wednesday’s launch of Australia’s aquatics uniforms for the Paris Games.

“I didn’t do anything for two and a half weeks, then they modified me for six weeks and I was definitely behind where I wanted to be at that point in the season.

‘But now I can’t think about that; it will just consume my mind and I have done an amazing job of making up for what I missed.

“And I’m training very well at the moment, in a good position for the Games and doing things in training that I haven’t done before.

‘Wearing this suit makes everything look very real. “You really have to earn it and even though I have it on today I’m still not in the team.”

Titmus said his training program complemented all three distances, so he was able to hedge his bets.

“Even the 800 meters (I won a silver in Tokyo), so that race is still a focus as well,” he said.

‘My favorite is the 400; I feel more confident running the 400. It’s a perfect race for me, but my concentration is still evenly divided.”

Meanwhile, two-time Olympic champion cyclist Anna Meares, Australia’s chef de mission for Paris, returned from a reconnaissance tour of Paris earlier this year pleased with the host city’s progress.

This week France raised its terror alert to the highest level after an attack on a Moscow concert hall that killed at least 130 people.

“From a security perspective, it is our top priority and we are always attentive to changes in security information,” he said.

“We are confident that the French government and the organizing committee are putting incredible plans in place to ensure the safety of not only the Australian team but also the spectators, family and friends.”

He said athletes will be allowed to leave the safety of the Olympic village and encouraged to attend the opening ceremony, which will take place on the Seine River for the first time at the Olympic Games.

“It’s open to athletes and sports to make that decision,” he said.

“If that increases performance and experience and they are prepared to attend, we would love to see them.”
