- Jessica Fox has landed a new role
- Will be a member of the IOC Commission
- Fox has been chosen by her peers
Australia’s double Paris gold medallist Jessica Fox will be a voice for athletes at the International Olympic Committee.
Canoeist Fox is among four Olympians elected Thursday by their peers to represent athletes on the IOC for the next eight years.
Fox joins seven-time American gold medalist Allyson Felix, German gymnast Kim Bui and New Zealand tennis player Marcus Daniell as newly selected athletes.
The quartet was chosen from a list of 32 candidates (more than 6,500 athletes at the Paris Games cast their votes).
The IOC has a maximum of 115 members, including members of European and Asian royal families, a head of state (the Emir of Qatar), former heads of government, sports officials, former Olympians and an Oscar-winning actress, Michelle Yeoh.
Duties of members at the IOC annual meetings include approving recommended candidates as future Olympic hosts.

As a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Fox will not receive a salary, but will benefit from a number of benefits.
The IOC will cover their expenses during their service, including travel, accommodation and meals. Members also travel in business class, while the IOC also pays for their spouses’ travel in business class.
The IOC has been criticized for the money it spends on its members, with critics arguing that the nonprofit would be better off spending its money on developing the sport and supporting athletes.
