A Chinese badminton player who proposed to his girlfriend after she won gold at the Paris Olympics has been criticised by his followers online for “making the moment about him”.
After winning the badminton mixed doubles competition with partner Zheng Siwei last Friday, there was double celebration for Huang Ya Qiong when her boyfriend Liu Yuchen got down on one knee and popped the question.
Liu was waiting for Huang with flowers after the medal presentation, but surprised her when he dropped to the ground and pulled out a ring to propose to her.
A visibly shocked Huang said yes to her partner, who was representing China in the men’s badminton doubles, and burst into tears after the romantic gesture.
However, Liu’s proposal did not go down well with fans on social media.

Following the viral moment, several users took to X to criticize the Olympian for stealing the spotlight after his girlfriend won gold, claiming that “it had to be about him.”
One wrote: ‘Men are so selfish. She won the gold medal so he had to make the whole moment about him.’
Another posted: “Men will always want to be the centre of attention. That’s their time, then a man comes along.”
“Are you going to propose to me after winning gold? Honey, you’ll never hear from me again! I had to talk about you,” said a third.
A fourth said: “She could have waited. Now her moment is overshadowed by a proposal.”
While another simply concluded: “Men always try to make it about themselves.”
Several users took to X to criticize Liu Yuchen for stealing the spotlight after his girlfriend Huang Ya Qiong’s win.
Huang said yes as she burst into tears after her boyfriend’s romantic gesture in Paris.
However, Liu Yuchen is not the only athlete proposing at this summer’s Olympics.
French 3,000m steeplechase star Alice Finot also celebrated breaking the European record by proposing to her partner at the Stade de France on Tuesday.
After finishing fourth in a very competitive race, Finot arrived in the stands with an impressive personal best time of eight minutes and 58.67 seconds.
