The Atherton runner won the women’s 800m final to claim the first Olympic gold of her career, breaking the British record set by Dame Kelly Holmes 20 years ago.
He crossed the finish line with a time of 1:56.72, almost half a second faster than silver medalist Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia with 1:57.15.
By winning gold, she made history by becoming the first British competitor to win athletics gold at this year’s sporting event.
Just days after her record-breaking victory, Keely was honored with a mural in Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter.

“My brother said to me, ‘Do you know how expensive they are?’ and I said, ‘If I win the Olympics, I’ll buy that car.'” I think it’s a Porsche Cayman. As long as it’s sporty, beige and looks pretty, that’s all I care about.”
The running sensation is now set to make big money following his recent success, thanks to his World Athletics award and a series of lucrative sponsorship deals.
And branding guru Marcel Knobil, who has worked with Coca Cola and Yamaha, said the sun: ‘His estimated earnings before these Olympics were around £250,000 thanks to companies such as Nike and Omega.
“Now, thanks to her exceptional talent, her golden success and her attractive personality and appearance, Keely can expect earnings well beyond £2 million next year alone.”
