Designers in the Netherlands have worked together to train the train of the future & # 39; to create with carriages that are suitable for every type of traveler, including people who want to socialize and make phone calls.
The NS railway company has hired a world-renowned architectural firm – which has designed the world's largest performing arts center in Taiwan – and a furniture company, responsible for creating the new concept.
The move is the answer to an investigation into the wishes of the passengers for their ideal train interior and hopefully will be rolled out by 2025.
The adjustable interior of the concept train has an office-like space for people with a specific work
Every year 373 million travelers spend their time in NS trains according to research in the Netherlands.
Gispen, the furniture company involved, said it would create a more pleasant journey in which passengers consider their commuter traffic as quality time; a moment to relax, work, study or meet each other. & # 39;
Passengers have mentioned six categories of activities that they would like to see on the train, which were announced last month at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.
During the annual event, people could even follow a VR tour about the fresh concept.
Those who prefer to socialize can go to the less formal zone with bleachy banks
The concept would naturally also serve as a normal train – but with adjustable modules
Activities marked by the public include activities that require concentration, such as working and studying, or relaxing activities such as reading, watching a movie or playing a game.
In addition, there is also a group of passengers who want social activities such as telephone calls, like to travel and chat together together – and so that customers who can draw each other's zeal separate from their choice of activities.
The modules of the train are fully flexible and even change throughout the day to meet the number and type of passengers.
These train blueprints show what the interior would look like if the plans were to flourish in 2025
The train, designed by Mecanoo and Gispen, will have 12 adjustable modules, determined by travelers who were asked what their ideal needs are when they travel with NS
& # 39; With the train of the future you get more out of your day, for example because you can work undisturbed.
& # 39; It will change the travel time to working time. Or time for reading, chatting or chilling. The train makes it all possible – it's the passengers who decide, "said Tjalling Smit, member of the board of directors of NS.
The train is far from the stuttering of the national railways in the United Kingdom, Arne Lijbers, associate architect at Mecanoo said: "The train is not just a tube where you travel from point A to point B.
There is also a zone to stand and lean (to the right of the image) which also offers space for bicycles and luggage. The adjustable carriage also has seat-like seats and low-hanging parts
People can choose to sit side by side or even look outside at a bar-like table
& # 39; It's a comfortable place to spend time where you feel at home and where a variety of activities that passengers want to do is possible. & # 39;
The design principle was to approach the train in the same way as the interior of the building: not as a bowl filled with chairs, but as a total concept.
The plans purchase the classic 2 × 2 model of the seats – which organizes two seats of two on each side of the train – and replace it with all kinds of options in the form of 12 new furniture modules.
There is even a thin row of single chairs that flank benches with folding tables
