This comes as embattled Democratic Mayor Eric Adams calls the continued rise in officer resignations a “law enforcement crisis.”
Mayor Adams has been outspoken about the law enforcement crisis in New York, saying that he and his team are working on solutions to address the problem.
“Safe streets,” Adams said Sunday, “public safety is a prerequisite for our prosperity.”
The new report of the New York Post found that some 239 officers resigned before March 1, a significant increase in recent years.
In 2022, only 176 officers resigned in January and February. In 2021, 110 left the force.
The new resignation statistics represent the highest the city has seen since 2007, when 250 police officers resigned amid contentious contract disputes.
Even more startling, however, is the statistic that nearly 4,000 officers left the force in all of 2022, the highest number since the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.
As for what’s causing the staffing problems, some have pointed to views about policing in the Democratic-run city, long hours and low pay.
The starting salary for an NYPD officer is $42,500 a year.
“Specifically, the laws written by Albany, the New York City Council, have made policing very difficult in New York City,” said retired NYPD Sgt. Joseph Giacalone. Fox 5 New York.
“And that’s what I think a lot of police officers just give up and say I can’t do this job anymore,” Giacalone said.

“And I think the police officers and firefighters have to be very respected and appreciated because without them, I don’t know where the city would be,” the person continued.
According According to the Post, almost every constituency in the city is short-staffed right now.
Response times for residents have also been significantly affected.
It’s a problem that Adams says he’s more than aware of and is trying to solve.
“What I think we missed is that we were going out and recruiting the capacity that we should have and we’re turning that around,” Adams said.
