New York Police officers are in an armed confrontation with a man with a gun outside the United Nations building.

The man can be seen on video pacing outside the building in Tudor City, along the East River. The incident was reported minutes before 11 a.m. at the bus stop at the intersection of E 42nd Street and 1st Ave.

He is a middle-aged white man with gray hair, wearing a red sweater and brown jacket. The man is said to have a shotgun in videos shared by citizens in the area.

Officers had their guns pointed at him as they gave their warnings and tried to negotiate with him. The man threatens to hurt himself.

Video footage shows the man pacing back and forth while holding the barrel of the gun to his chin.

All UN personnel and delegates at headquarters have been ordered to take shelter in place.

Stephane Dujarric, UN Security General’s spokesman, issued a shelter warning in place with minimal information. The note simply states that a “security situation” is underway and instructs recipients to contact the NYPD for more information.

The NYPD issued a traffic advisory around 11 a.m. and warned citizens to avoid the area as emergency vehicles are expected to surround the area. Traffic along FDR Drive has been affected.

An estimated two dozen emergency vehicles have arrived at the scene.

Helicopters flew over the area and a city bus has been used to block traffic in the upper town.
