The other was identified as Matthew Mahrer, 22, of Manhattan.

New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said in a statement that the threat that Brown and another person posed to the Jewish community was discovered Friday by state and federal police.

“By early Saturday, the NYPD’s exhaustive intelligence gathering led to the arrest by sharp-eyed MTA police officers of two people entering Penn Station in Manhattan and the seizure of a knife large game, an illegal Glock 17 firearm and 30 rounds magazine and various other items,’ Sewell said.

A warning was issued Friday for Christopher Brown, 22, a man with a history of mental illness who recently threatened synagogues in the New York area. Brown and another person were arrested and their weapons seized at Penn Station on Saturday.

According to federal and local law enforcement reports, Brown wanted to travel to the Big Apple in order to purchase a firearm.

It is currently unknown if he would meet with Mahrer to purchase the gun from him.

Brown was charged with making a terroristic threat, aggravated stalking and criminal possession of a weapon. Mahrer was only charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Sewell said Police Department commanders have deployed “strategic assets to sensitive locations throughout New York City” to increase security around Jewish communities.

“I join all New Yorkers today in expressing my gratitude and pride in the ever vigilant work of our women and men of the NYPD, who stand guard 24/7 to protect the peace and ensure that never there is violence.” for the city and its people,’ added Sewell.

This is a developing story.
