NXIVM sex cult leader Keith Raniere recruited from the same Mormon community massacred by cartel cannons in Mexico, it is claimed.
Nine members of the LeBaron family were attacked eight kilometers apart on Monday during a trip in a convoy of three SUV's on an unpaved road.
The police confirmed that they arrested a suspected drug lord after the murders in which one vehicle was set on fire and riddled with bullets.
And since then, the remote Mormon stronghold has emerged in Mexico, founded by American citizens fleeing a polygamy ban, and also a target for NXIVM founder Raniere.
He was convicted of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, fraud conspiracy, forced labor conspiracy, sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and attempted sex trafficking in June.
Raniere is said to have told Mormon women who live near the Mexican border that he could offer them safety away from drug violence, The slate reported in May.

At least three American mothers and six children from a Mormon community in northern Mexico were massacred during an attack on armed drug cartel shooters. Maria Rhonita Miller was murdered together with her six month old twins, Titus and Tiana (left and right), her 10 year old daughter Krystal (left) and the 12 year old son Howard (middle)
The women were then recruited as nannies at his compound in New York, The New York Post reports.
Mark Vicente, a documentary maker who collaborated with Raniere, said that a film they made together became a recruitment tool for Nxivm.
It shows how Raniere spoke to Julian LeBaron, whose brother Benjamin LeBaron, founder of a crime-fighting group named SOS Chihuahua, was murdered in 2009.
Julian LeBaron said he & # 39; never agreed to use the Raniere movie as a recruitment tool & # 39;
Following the allegations against Raniere, Julian said: & # 39; I never agreed to use the film as any form of recruitment. & # 39;
LeBaron confirmed on Monday that some of his relatives were burned alive in the slaughter linked to the cartel.
& # 39; We do not know why, although they had received indirect threats. We don't know who did it & # 39 ;, he told Reuters.
He said on his Facebook page that one of those deaths was his cousin Rhonita Maria LeBaron, later identified as Rhonita Miller.
Miller and four of her children – her six-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana, her 10-year-old daughter Krystal and the 12-year-old son Howard – were all killed.
Two more mothers, Dawna Langford and Christina Langford Johnson, as well as Dawna's sons, 11 and three years old, were all killed.
The mothers rode in separate vehicles with their children from the La Mora religious community where they live, a decades-old settlement in the state of Sonora, founded as part of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of their vehicle full of bullet holes.
Christina & # 39; s son Devin walked 13 miles to get help from family members. He covered his wounded brothers and sisters with branches before trying to find out where the shots came from to avoid the shooters as he walked away.
Mexican security secretary Alfonso Durazo said the shooters may have mistaken the large SUVs of the group for rival gangs.

The slaughter of American citizens on Mexican territory quickly became an international issue in which President Donald Trump promised Tuesday to help Mexico wage war against his drug cartels.
The president of Mexico, Manuel Lopez Obrador, said he would discuss security with the US on Tuesday after Trump had fired a series of tweets.
Small Mormon and Mormon communities of American origin have been living in northwestern Mexico since the end of the 19th century. The early Mormon settlers in Mexico fled the threat of arrest in the United States for practicing polygamy.
Self-help & # 39; guru & # 39; and NXIVM sex cult leader Keith Raniere has been convicted in a lurid sex trade case
The guru of a cult-like self-improvement group that attracted heirs and Hollywood actresses was convicted in June of turning his female devotees into his sex slaves through shame, punishment, and nude blackmail.
Keith Raniere's trial lasted six weeks, during which time several women were called to the stand to describe how they served as & # 39; sex slaves & # 39; for Raniere, 58, and were forced to have his initials branded on their bodies.
These women testified about how they were forced to hand over collateral in the form of damning and often false statements about themselves, while also providing graphic nude photos of themselves, including images of their genitals.
That wasn't all, with Raniere also demanding that the woman stay thin and not trim her pubic hair.
Those two edicts were performed by the female masters, each of whom was assigned to a group of slaves, with most women being limited to just 500 calories per day.
A witness described how Raniere held her imprisoned in a room for two years, while an FBI agent showed jury members the graphic nude photos of a 15-year-old Nxivm member he had discovered on Raniere's hard drive.
The trial also revealed that Raniere had raped that girl, the younger sister of the woman imprisoned by the cult leader.
Both women were also forced to undergo abortion at some point after becoming pregnant.
The women have a third sister who was also involved in the group. She has a child with Raniere.
