Nvidia is launching its latency-reducing technology, Reflex, to anyone who has an Nvidia graphics card and the PC version of OverwatchThe company has tested the feature in Overwatch ‘s PTR servers in March, but now Reflex is live and theoretically available for competitive play. Nvidia claims Reflex shortens the time between pulling the trigger Overwatch and the game that displays the recording on the screen by a whopping 50 percent, and you can easily test that now.
Latency can be caused by several things (internet speed can be a big factor in competitive play), but Reflex aims to reduce latency caused by computer hardware. The longer the delay between a click and the game’s response, the more likely that what the player responded to is already out of the picture. In this case, Nvidia’s technology isn’t new, and Overwatch is just the latest esports title fully added to the small collection of 15 games that support Reflex to date.
I can’t say how well the function works without trying, but if Nvidia’s video demonstration is to be believed, it might only be noticeable to a professional player who can feel the microsecond difference in latency. Nvidia suggests that in some cases that small difference could drastically change the outcome. According to Nvidia’s demo, enabling Reflex could be the difference between a direct hit and missing altogether.
Your mileage may vary, but if you have an Nvidia graphics card – Reflex works on cards as old as the GTX 900 series – and a G-Sync monitor, you should give the low latency feature a try. To enable Reflex, you need the latest version of Nvidia’s drivers and an updated copy of the game you want to use it in. The company is also collaborating to create specific monitors with a Reflex Latency Analyzer feature.
