Nvidia finally announced the GeForce RTX 2080 at Gamescom 2018 in Cologne, Germany, and it is a sample of a graphics card.
Through Nvidia's own account, the RTX 2080 can be between one and a half to two times more powerful than the Nvidia GTX 1080 that it needs to replace. And that is not even a moving basis on the real-time ray tracing that this graphic card can broadcast.
If this starts to sound like you're the next graphics card or we're even a little excited about this incredible GPU, read on for all you need to know about the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080.
Cut to the chase
- What is it? Nvidia & # 39; s next generation flagship graphic card
- When is it out? September 20, 2018
- How much is it? $ 699 (£ 749, AU $ 1,199)
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 release date
Now, with all the rumors and leaks behind us, we know for sure that two of the three graphics cards of the Nvidia RTX 20 series, including the RTX 2080, will be launched on September 20th.
This means that the products must be available in stores and for general online ordering on that day, and pre-orders processed today on 20 August (at the time of writing) must be sent the same day: 20 September. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 is expected to arrive a little later in October 2018.
As far as the mobile version is concerned, however, it is more mysterious. We have seen that the mobile RTX 2080 is indeed on the road, but we do not know when it will come on the market. If we had to guess, we would fix it somewhere in the first half of 2019.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 price
This is where things can be a little tricky, because Nvidia is currently talking about two prizes with regard to the new RTX graphics cards at the time of writing. There are the prizes announced by Nvidia CEO Jen-sen Huang on the podium and found on the website of Nvidia. This is what Huang said on the podium:
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: $ 999 (about £ 753, AU $ 1,388)
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080: $ 699 (about £ 527, AU $ 936)
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070: $ 499 (about £ 376, AU $ 668)
Now, here are the prices that are listed on the website of Nvidia, where you can order the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti from now on. Spoiler alert: they are much higher:
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: $ 1,199 (AU $ 1,899, around £ 904)
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080: $ 799 (AU $ 1,199, around £ 602)
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070: $ 599 (AU $ 899, around £ 451)
For reference, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Nvdia GTX 1080 came with starting prices at $ 699 (£ 679, AU $ 1099) and $ 599 (£ 600, AU $ 925), respectively.
So, no matter what price the real deal is, these cards are clearly more expensive than previous launches. This is probably the reason why Nvidia does a lot of effort to inform the masses about ray tracing and its benefits, because this is an important characteristic of the graphics cards that are likely to be expensive to produce.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 specs
This is the exciting part of the article. In May, the reported specifications of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 were spotted in the TechPowerUp GPU database and looked juicy. Now, however, we are aware of the real deal, and although they are still impressive, you need to adjust your expectations to the core specifications.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 was generally expected to be more powerful than even the Nvidia Titan Xp, the most powerful graphics card for consumers currently on the market. However, this is not necessarily the case on paper – the Titan Xp still has more CUDA cores and more video memory capacity.
This is how the RTX 2080 turns off in the most essential specifications, namely clock speed, video memory capacity and video memory speed:
As you can see, Nvidia has improved its Founders Edition card for early adopters, namely in the processor speed range that you can reserve at this time (before September 20). You can see that the basic RTX 2080 actually has a slightly lower clock speed than its predecessor, the GTX 1080.
This update, however, brings with it a vastly improved GDDR6 video memory, which works at 4 Gbps faster data transfer speeds than the previous model.
Moreover, Nvidia is not necessarily focused on the speeds of feeds of these graphics cards, but rather on the technology that makes the Turing graphics processors possible, in particular real-time ray tracing and machine learning for advanced rendering.
The RTX 2080 supports the latest video playback and output standards, and series connection of graphics cards via the SLI protocol using the additional Nvidia RTX NVLink Bridge section, which costs $ 79 (about £ 59, AU $ 105). The card can support up to 8K (7.860 x 4.320) video resolution and has a 215W thermal design capability.
Chances are that with this part you have to upgrade at least one other piece to make it go smoothly, namely if you have a diet that does not have enough power to throw around.
This is now the case with regard to the Nvidia RTX 2080 – stay informed for more information and insights and a complete assessment.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 performance
Although we do not really have the new in-office cards to conduct our own tests, Nvidia has released official information on the performance of the RTX 2080.
Nvidia claims that the RTX 2080 can almost double the performance of the CD Nvidia GTX 1080but only when DLSS (deep learning super-sampling) is enabled. For most other games you can probably expect a 20-40% higher performance, allowing 4K gaming at a fixed speed of 60 fps.
Although the released benchmarks of Nvidia are incredibly vague, this gives us an idea what we can expect from the new maps when they are launched here in a few weeks.
If rumors have to be true, there is at least one Nvidia RTX 2080 card tested in the wild and it even seems to outperform the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti with 5% and the Nvidia GTX 1080 with 35% in 3DMark Time Spy.

We got a chance to play with the RTX 2080 bigger Ti-brother at Nvidia's event, and although we can not say which games we played, we can say that the RTX 2080 Ti delivered a smooth 4K experience of 60 fps in different titles.
As far as performance in practice is concerned, we know exactly what the Nvidia RTX 2080 is capable of as soon as we have it in hand. Until then, take this information with a grain of salt.
