Kate Garraway has revealed she was attacked by trolls on social media for laughing during her return to Good Morning Britain on Thursday.
The TV presenter put on a brave face as she returned to work this week alongside co-presenter Ben Shepherd, following the death of her husband Derek Draper aged 56.
During a conversation with actor Larry Lamb and Marie Curie bereavement coordinator Claire Collins, Kate spoke about the hate she had received online.
She said: “I got some criticism on social media yesterday for laughing at you (Ben), as if that meant I didn’t care… I have to laugh!”
Kate admitted she has felt “numb” since losing Derek, as she said “no one is prepared to deal with it (death).
The GMB host went on to say that her children have been struggling with how to deal with other people who feel uncomfortable around them.

She said: ‘I’m trying to help my children, one thing they’ve said is that people don’t know what to tell them. They want to help other people feel comfortable with them. Not to ignore it, but to help…’
Kate added: “Ben wants to know how to support me, so how does he do that?”
Kate returned to present performances on Thursday for the first time since her husband’s death, telling delighted viewers that “life has to start again” and “nothing has changed.”
Kate opened the show with her old colleague Ben, who told her she had “made Derek proud” with her conduct after his funeral last week.
Kate thanked him and admitted to feeling “wobbly,” but said, “I definitely wanted it to be about Derek, not me.”
“It was also really lovely to feel so much love from everyone here.”
Last week, the presenter fought back tears on the show just three days after her husband Derek’s funeral to reveal heartbreaking details of his final hours and how his daughter Darcey, 17, told him: “We’ll be okay, dad” before for him to escape. .
Speaking about her decision to return to the show this morning, Kate claimed that ‘life has to start again’.

“We have to get up, that’s what Derek did and would want us to do.”

“The makeup artists made me cry this morning just by saying hello,” Garraway said at the start of the show.
“Thank you to everyone at home too. I know I mentioned it on Monday, but you guys have been amazing.”
Co-host Ben Shephard joked that he would give Garraway some “leeway” before saying she made her husband proud with the “extraordinary funeral.”
“You really made Derek proud, it was extraordinary,” he said.
Kate also joked: “I can’t wait to get dried off.”
