- Roosters running back will be in front of the field for a serious charge
- He allegedly left a person seriously injured while driving
Roosters NRL star Sandon Smith has been hit with a serious charge after allegedly leaving a person seriously injured while driving.
The 21-year-old is due to appear courtside at Sydney’s Downing Center on Thursday, charged with careless driving causing grievous bodily harm.
That offense carries a maximum penalty of nine months in prison, a fine of $2,200 and an unlimited driving disqualification for the first offence.
A Roosters spokesperson has confirmed the club is aware of the charge, as is the NRL Integrity Unit.
Smith made his NRL debut in Round 14 of 2023 against the Bulldogs, making history in the process by becoming the first Roosters star to reach first grade after coming through the club’s Central Coast pathways program .
This season he replaced halfback Sam Walker after he was seriously injured in the team’s loss to Canberra on 1 September.
Sandon Smith (pictured playing for the Roosters this year) will face court in Sydney on Thursday after being charged with careless driving causing grievous bodily harm.
The 21-year-old is considered the first choice to play at halfback for the Roosters next season with his usual number 7, Sam Walker, out for an extended period due to a serious injury.
Smith led the team during their big win over Souths in the final regular season game, before retaining his place for the Roosters’ final campaign.
He was a big target in their loss to Penrith in the first week of the finals before aiming upwards when the Chooks comfortably beat Manly the following week and then fell to the Storm on September 27 to end their season.
Depending on the outcome of his court hearing, Smith should be first in line to play running back for the Roosters in 2025, given that Walker is not expected to return until about halfway through the season.
