Nova FM’s Fitzy and Wippa Nearly Killed Ed Sheeran in Radio Prank Gone Wrong

Fitzy and Wippa Nearly Killed Two Celebs (And Their Newscaster): Nova Radio Hosts Reveal Their Worst Stunts Ever on Their 10-Year Anniversary

Nova 96.9 breakfast hosts Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli are celebrating 10 years on radio in Sydney this week.

And the popular duo marked the occasion on Friday by sharing some of their wildest stunts with news.com.au — including a prank that nearly killed Ed Sheeran.

The British singer, 30, has made many appearances on Fitzy & Wippa but the presenters said two moments stood out because they were particularly dangerous.

The first saw the pair arrange for Ed to surprise a group of fans at the Nova studios in Sydney, but they underestimate the fans’ enthusiasm.

“One of them shot at him, wrapped her arms around Ed’s neck and wouldn’t let go. Security had to rip this girl off him,’ said Wippa.

Another chaotic moment was when executive producer Tom Ivey offered Ed a birthday cake in his own likeness.

The Perfect hitmaker leaned forward to take a bite, but a piece of wire scratched his nose.

“It could have easily gone right up his nose,” Fitzy said, adding that Ed realized he’d narrowly avoided a serious injury by saying, “Thank God for that.”

Funnily enough, later that day, a sound operator accidentally knocked over a lamp and landed on Ed’s head, but caused no damage.

The radio-funny men also recalled giving celebrity chef Jamie Oliver food poisoning.

But before you assume they hold a grudge against the British, they claimed it was accidental due to an oversight in the kitchen.

Fitzy and Wippa gave Jamie a new snack they’d designed for that year’s Royal Easter Show: meat and three vegetables on a stick.

The snack had been prepared and refrigerated the night before, but someone had left it out of the fridge for five hours before Jamie tasted it in the air.

Jamie joked at the time, ‘I’m getting food poisoning,’ Fitzy said.

‘And we were told the next day that he had to cancel a few interviews’ [that afternoon] because he wanted to go back to his hotel.’

There was also a perilous moment when Nova FM newsreader Matt de Groot taped it for a boxing match with NRL star turned professional boxer Paul Gallen.

Paul didn’t hold back despite it being a novelty, and Matt was left with two broken ribs and had to take a few days off.
