Nottingham Forest on the brink of signing Taiwo Awoniyi for a club record fee

Nottingham Forest are set to DESTROY their transfer record by taking over Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin… with the newly promoted club poised to spend £17.5million to bring the former Liverpool to the City Ground

  • Taiwo Awoniyi was in Liverpool’s books for six years between 2015 and 2021
  • However, he failed to break through into the first team and was regularly loaned out
  • After signing for Union Berlin last year, he flourished in Germany, scoring 15 goals
  • He is now about to return to England to join Nottingham Forest
  • Forest are willing to break their club record transfer fee to sign the striker

Nottingham Forest are nearing Taiwo Awoniyi’s club record signing with significant transfer funds set aside for the newly promoted club this summer.

Awoniyi scored 15 goals last season to help Union Berlin rise above their weight in the Bundesliga and is said to have set his heart on a move to the Premier League despite interest from RB Leipzig. It is expected to cost around £17.5 million.

Awoniyi, 24, came to Liverpool in 2015 and was loaned out to six different clubs without breaking through at Anfield.

Suggestions have been made that Liverpool will be entitled to a percentage of the transfer fee as part of his move to Union last summer for nearly £6million.

Forest is believed to have at least £70 million available to bolster the squad this summer to help Steve Cooper move them to the top flight as they prepare to compete in the Premier League for the first time this century.

They are still negotiating with another Bundesliga club, Mainz, over the prize for Moussa Niakhate, with Mainz chasing at least £13million for the defender.

Forest is looking at other reinforcements in the defense and is said to have expressed interest in Argentina international Nicolas Tagliafico, who will leave Ajax this summer. Tagliafico, 29, still has two years to go in the Netherlands.

With Brice Samba’s future unclear – the French goalkeeper is wanted by Lens – Forest has also expressed interest in Dean Henderson, who is on loan from Manchester United.
