Nottingham Forest confirmed the signing of Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi for a club record amount on Saturday morning.

The Union Berlin attacker is said to have completed a transfer worth around £17.5 million, beating Portuguese midfielder Joao Carvalho’s previous record in 2018.

Liverpool will receive £1.75 million from the deal due to a 10% resale clause agreed upon on its move to Union Berlin in 2021.

Awoniyi told the club’s website: “I am very excited to be here in Nottingham Forest.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and after talking to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club I want to be a part of.”

The former Liverpool striker scored 15 goals last season to help his side rise above their weight in the Bundesliga and has opted to move to the Premier League despite interest from RB Leipzig.

The 24-year-old came to Liverpool in 2015 and was loaned out to six different clubs without breaking through at Anfield.

Awoniyi will become Forest’s first international signing since their promotion to the Premier League last month, as the club look set to stand out during the summer transfer window.

Forest is believed to have at least £70 million available to bolster the squad this summer to help Steve Cooper move them to the top flight as they prepare to compete in the Premier League for the first time this century.

They are still negotiating with another Bundesliga club, Mainz, over the prize for Moussa Niakhate, with Mainz chasing at least £13million for the defender.
