A woman has begged thieves to think twice before breaking into her car and instead stealing from someone who “looks like they can afford it.”
The car owner taped a large note to her driver’s seat window in a bizarre attempt to deter thieves from robbing her.
A photo of the note was shared on the Facebook page WA Incident alets.
She explained in her impassioned plea that a series of burglaries had left her in debt and she couldn’t afford another robbery.
“Please leave my car alone,” the note read.
“There’s nothing of value here. I’m already in debt from burglaries where nothing was stolen. If you want to steal, find a car that looks like it can afford.
“Please, and hopefully thank you.”
Western Australians were outraged by the woman’s message in the note.
One of them said, “I got lost at ‘If you want to steal, find a car that looks like they can afford it’.”
A second added: ‘They steal because they can and usually without fear of repercussions. Most of what they steal will be dumped, so it’s not out of necessity or want.’
A third stated, “I’d break in to make that note.” It’s the director.’

Another wrote: ‘I’m not sure telling them to break into someone else’s car is good CARma.
“I understand you’re pretty annoyed, and I don’t blame you, but you still have a lot to do to encourage them to break into better cars,” said a fourth.
“You don’t live long enough to realize that most of us have worked extremely hard to have better cars and most of us don’t even own them, we pay them off.
“Unfortunately I do this every time I go to The Empire in Burswood for a night out as my car was also a victim,” said one woman.
Another commented, ‘First night in Hedland last week, passenger window smashed. Welcome to Hedland.’
Another woman said she had thought about leaving thieves a thank you note.
“Our cars are broken into all the time, but nothing is taken away, even if there were expensive items in the car,” she said.
“We wrote a thank you note and left $10. But then we realized that was a bad idea and would only cause more problems. So we took it out again.’
Many reminisced about the days when cars would be left unlocked and untouched.
“My mom used to leave the car open when she lived in Hedland,” someone said.
Another commented, “Growing up in Hedland, my dad just left the windows open and the ashtray out.”
