No. 3 Vols passes Alabama and makes a case against AP Top 25

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Grant Williams scored 21 points and No. 3 Tennessee came on Saturday Alabama 71-68 in a row for his twelfth consecutive win and a chance to climb on top of the AP Top 25.

After No. 1 Duke lost from Monday to Syracuse and No. 2 Michigan fell Saturday in Wisconsin, volunteers (16-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) could lead the poll Monday for the first time since 2008.

After winning the first four SEC games with an average of 25 points, Tennessee had a much harder time with the Crimson Tide. John Petty matches a career high with 30 points, and Alabama (11-6, 2-3) lost 15 points to lead later in the second half. But Petty also had a critical turnover in the last seconds.

Tennessee led 69-68 when Williams was called up for an offensive offense after leaning in the left hand in Alabama's Donta Hall. After a time-out, Alabama carried the ball to Petty, who traveled when he started his ride with 3.2 seconds left.

Lamonte & # 39; Turner made two free throws to extend Tennessee's lead to 71-68 with 2.5 seconds remaining. Alabama had no more time-outs and the Tide & # 39; s Kira Lewis Jr. was not even on the right wing when he launched a desperate shot that did not come close.

Admiral Schofield had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Tennessee, and he made the basket that ended the Vols for good with 2:12. Jordan Bowden scored 12 points and Jordan Bone added 10.

Hall had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis added 12 points.

WELCOME VISION

Former Tennessee star Tony White, who fights against leukemia, attended Saturday's game and received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd when he was presented at midcourt during a time-out. White's 51-point performance against Auburn in February 1984 remains Tennessee's single-game scoring record.

Alabama: Free-throw shooting has doomed the Tide. Alabama was 4 out of 13 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Tennessee: the volunteers won the last 12 straight in 1976-77, when they turned 22-6 and earned part of the SEC regular season title. Williams showed why he is an All-America candidate because he made countless big games at the far end of the floor, including blocking Petty's 3-point attempt in the final minutes.
