Nicola Sturgeon claims unusual internet rumors about her personal life were “part of the reason” she quit

  • She has dropped allegations that she has a real estate portfolio and is a ‘secret lesbian’
  • Users even say that she got into an affair with a diplomat

Nicola Sturgeon has claimed that unusual internet rumors about her personal life were “part of the reason” she stepped down as first minister.

Speaking in the wake of her abrupt resignation, Sturgeon said yesterday that social media chatter had led her to seek more privacy.

In particular, she has shot down claims online that she is the proud owner of a global real estate portfolio, as well as being a “secret lesbian”.

In one account, users say she entered into an extramarital affair with a French diplomat. Some rumors claim that the pair bought tennis legend Judy Murray’s old house to use as a love nest.

Other wild claims have suggested that Ms Sturgeon is able to withhold “the truth” from the public under a court-imposed “injunction”.

Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday that social media chatter had led her to seek more privacy

But speaking on a new BBC podcast, Nicola-The Person, former Prime Minister debunked outlandish internet theories, saying: “I’ve been reading accounts about my life on social media and I think, ‘You know, it’s a lot more glamorous it looks and a lot more exciting’.” ”

He was asked: “Which French diplomat do you have a relationship with?” She laughed and replied, “I’ll tell you off camera which one it’s supposed to be but whatever the camera is, we actually laughed at it.”

Taking a more serious tone, Sturgeon admitted that the gossip may have gotten to her.

Saying “maybe it’s part of the reason” she resigned, she said: “I’m not naive, I’m not of the opinion that I’m going to step down one day and be completely anonymous the next, I understand the facts. What I’ve done and am still in Parliament, but I want to have More privacy, I want to have more anonymity and I just want to protect some of what people take for granted in their lives.
