Kelly Stafford, the wife of NFL star Matthew Stafford, apologized to the quarterback’s former teammate after he became caught in a “storm” over his college love life.

Kelly recently revealed that she dated her husband’s college understudy, just to make him jealous.

The Los Angeles Rams star played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2006 to 2008. His future wife, then known as Kelly Hall, was a cheerleader for the Athens-based team around the same time.

Joe Cox was among the team’s other quarterbacks at the time, but Stafford apologized to his family and insisted he had “no involvement” in the saga.

“To this beautiful family… I’m sorry for the media storm that occurred last week and that came into your lives,” he wrote.

‘You had ZERO involvement in what I talked about and in fact it was all of your college relationships that I admired and wanted for Matthew and me.

‘You were the couple that everyone thinks Matthew and I were… you were all the UGA QB and cheerleader who met and never let go. I love you all.’

In a later post, he added: ‘If it didn’t affect others I wouldn’t even address it because it was so comical the way things went wrong.

‘It was 16 years ago and if you asked Matthew and I if we would change anything about what we did back then… no.

“But we appreciate the laughs.”

In the Off The Vine podcast appearance that sparked a huge reaction, Kelly revealed: “At first it wasn’t such a nice relationship: I hated him, I loved him. “I went out with the backup (quarterback) to piss him off, which worked.”

He added: “He was the bad boy too.” Matthew is so sweet… southern gentleman and all. And the backup was the complete opposite and he pissed him off.”

After the release, fans speculated about whether Cox or Joe Tereshinski III was the QB Kelly had hinted at, but now it appears Cox has been ruled out.

On the podcast, Kelly also revealed that their new relationship led Stafford to confront her and warn her about her teammate.

“They lived in the same dorm because the athletes lived in the same dorm and he saw my car there,” she continued.

‘Then at one point he waited, followed me and got into my car. And it wouldn’t come out. I was like, “This is amazing, it’s working!”‘

After she told him to get out of his car, Stafford replied, “He’s not the one for you.” To which Kelly replied, “You can’t tell me that!”

Stafford then went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, and came out of college as the most highly-touted prospect in years.

He was drafted by the Detroit Lions, where he spent 11 years, before heading to the Los Angeles Rams in 2011.

He then won the Super Bowl in his first season on the West Coast, helping the Rams to a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium.
