Matthew Stafford’s wife Kelly has revealed that she dated the quarterback’s college backup, just to make him jealous.
The Los Angeles Rams star played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2006 to 2008. His future wife, then known as Kelly Hall, was a cheerleader in Athens around the same time.
Kelly has claimed that Stafford was trying to date her casually while they were students, even though she was fully committed to the football star.
So she decided to ‘mold’ him by leaving him for his backup, who lived in the same dorm and was the polar opposite.
“At first it wasn’t such a nice relationship: I hated him, I loved him,” Kelly revealed on the show. off the vine podcast. “I went out with the backup (quarterback) to piss him off, which worked.”

He added: “He was the bad boy too.” Matthew is so sweet… southern gentleman and all. And the backup was the complete opposite and he pissed him off.”
During the 2006 season, Stafford was a freshman who played as a backup to Joe Tereshinski III before taking over the starting job. Joe Cox also played quarterback for the Bulldogs that year.
Then, in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Stafford was Georgia’s starting quarterback, with Cox serving as the backup. He became the first overall pick in the 2009 draft.
But Kelly revealed how their new relationship led Stafford to confront her and warn her about her teammate.
“At first it wasn’t such a nice relationship: I hated him, I loved him,” Kelly revealed.
The couple is now happily married and have four young daughters together.
“They lived in the same dorm because the athletes lived in the same dorm and he saw my car there,” she continued.
‘Then at one point he waited, followed me and got into my car. And it wouldn’t come out. I was like, “This is amazing, it’s working!”
After she told him to get out of her car, Stafford responded, “He’s not the right one for you.” To which Kelly replied: ‘You can’t tell me that!’
Stafford spent 11 years with the Detroit Lions before joining the Rams in 2021. He led Los Angeles to the Super Bowl in his first season.
