News from Australia LIVE: Albanese Prepares Labor Relations Reform; Wilkie claims Australia’s ‘clean coal’ is a scam

The Senate’s director of government affairs, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, has said it is “quite likely” the upper house will need to sit extra days this year to pass its legislation, including the controversial labor relations bill.

“Obviously, there’s a packed agenda, a lot of bills to pass and individual bills that will require substantive debate, so I would expect us to need additional hours and possibly days,” Gallagher said in the press gallery corridor.

The government needs the support of the Greens and one more MP for the bill to pass the Senate, however the most likely supporter, David Pocock, wants the bill split to pass the less controversial aspects and leave the debate on the multi-employer negotiation for the next one. year.

Gallagher said the bill fully worked. “To forge a part of the negotiation [provision] it’s going to compromise other parts of the bill,” he said.

“I think it’s not unusual for a bill that seeks to reform the labor relations system to be treated in this way. If you take away pieces here and there, it’s a lot harder to deliver.”

Earlier on ABC radio, Gallagher said the Senate will likely meet on two Fridays of the next two weeks to make up for the extra session days.

“We’ll see where we get to at the end of the first week,” he said.

“We have a lot of bills to pay, and it’s pretty wild in the next two weeks… so I think we’ll end up with overtime. We haven’t locked everyone in on this yet.”
