Newcastle United are in talks about a transfer for Bayer Leverkusen left back Mitchel Bakker.
The Dutch U21 international, a product of Ajax academy, only joined Leverkusen from Paris St Germain last summer on a deal worth up to £8.5million and Newcastle are ready to offer them a quick win.
Bakker is a modern full-back. He is over six feet tall, has the build of a central defender, so he would provide the much needed height and athleticism in that role plus pace.

Eddie Howe is also hoping to make a £30m deal with Sevilla’s Diego Carlos (above) this week
He was the first choice for Paris St Germain under Thomas Tuchel, but fell out of favor under Mauricio Pochettino and then sought a new project with Leverkusen. Now Newcastle hopes to seduce him with their project.
Another Newcastle target, Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is making a formal transfer request.
The 28-year-old will play against Valencia tonight, with Sevilla so far refusing to accept Newcastle’s £28million offer.

Centre-back is a priority for Eddie Howe and the club has struggled around several goals to try and provide two reliable defenders who can give them that extra security while trying to stay afloat. Newcastle have conceded 43 goals in just 20 Premier League appearances this season. Only Norwich has a worse defensive record.
Brazilian Diego wants to come to Newcastle and will receive a significant pay rise, but Sevilla are now hesitant to make a deal as Jules Kunde struggles with an injury and they have little cover.
Newcastle hope his request to leave can help Sevilla reach a compromise.

Sevilla remain keen on a deal for Manchester United striker Anthony Martial and that could come into play if they cash in on Diego’s sale. Juventus have also asked about Martial, but say his salary and rent mean a deal is not feasible.
Howe’s side are 19th in the standings after a late goal against Watford on Saturday and face Leeds for an international break.
Howe has already signed England fullback Kieran Trippier for £12 million and former Burnley striker Chris Wood for £25 million in a bid to avoid relegation following the takeover by the club’s new owners in October.
