The mother of a 21-year-old who was brutally murdered by her ex has made a plea for people to stop avoiding her, saying their attempts to stay away are only making things worse.

Tabitha Acret, from Newcastle, was on holiday in Cairns in March when she was told her daughter Mackenzie Anderson had been stabbed to death by her ex-partner.

Ms Acret said one of the hardest things she’d experienced in the three months since her daughter died was the way other people reacted.

‘I am a dental hygienist and a professional speaker by profession. I used to be inundated with people, now I see them walking in the opposite direction,” said Ms Acret. MamaMia

‘After this I’m still human. Don’t avoid me. I know you may be sad or worried about what to say, but keeping your distance makes it worse.”

Ms Anderson was allegedly murdered at 10:40 pm on 25 March by her ex-boyfriend Tyrone Thompson in her unit on Crebert Street in Mayfield, Newcastle.

Police say Thompson stabbed her more than 20 times.

Her two-year-old son was found nearby, unharmed but covered in her blood.

Ms Acret has previously called for more men to be involved in campaigns advocating an end to domestic violence against women.

Less than a week after her daughter’s brutal murder, Ms. Acret spoke of her “new reality” and the “overwhelming grief” she was experiencing.

“We have tragically lost our beautiful little girl,” Ms Acret wrote on Instagram on March 30.

“No parent should have to bury a child and unfortunately this is our new reality… It is an overwhelming sadness that is in our hearts right now.”

Three months after her daughter’s death, Ms Acret said she wanted to have conversations about violence against women to ensure that no other family has to endure the suffering her daughter has endured.

She said it was time for a change and to really question why men committed violence and how society failed them.

Ms Acret said that while the conversation was emotionally exhausting, she needed to get her daughter justice and try to prevent future alleged crimes.

In an earlier interview with Daily Mail Australia, the boy’s godmother said Mackenzie’s boy was cared for by family and cuddled a lot.

“He’s safe,” Alice McEvoy said.

“He’s asking for mommy, but he’s safe and gets lots of hugs.”

Thompson has been charged with murdering Mackenzie, intentionally breaking into a home and violating AVO.

On the day of Mrs. Anderson’s death, she reportedly spent several hours drinking and socializing with Thompson.

He is said to have left the house, but returned a few hours later and entered Mrs. Anderson’s unit “without her permission.”

Ms Anderson called the police to inform them that Thompson was violating the AVO, but tragically by the time they arrived – just minutes later – she had reportedly been stabbed 20 times and died on the spot.

Police said Thompson was still at the scene and suffered cuts and damage to his hands.

He was arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Friends of the couple said Ms. Anderson and Thompson were in the early stages of reviving their relationship after she split from him months earlier.
