Newcastle United have agreed a deal in principle to acquire highly regarded Dutch defender Sven Botman from Lille for £32million.

Botman, 22, has undergone a medical examination and will sign a five-year contract at St James’ Park.

In a statement, the club said the “transfer formalities will be completed this week”, after which he will be confirmed as a Newcastle player.

The Holland Under-21 centre-back was always enthusiastic about Newcastle, despite AC Milan’s interest and boss Eddie Howe had long identified him as his main target in that position. It was an opinion shared by the Scouting team and the property of the club.

Sven Botman will formally finalize his move from Lille to Newcastle later this week

An approach in January backfired when the clubs couldn’t agree on a fee, but negotiations resumed this month and despite frustration when Lille raised the asking price to £37million, a compromise has been reached. The deal will include add-ons.

Botman will be Newcastle’s third signing this summer, having added left-back Matt Targett and goalkeeper Nick Pope.

But the club’s hunt for Reims striker Hugo Ekikike is all but dead. Sources say the 20-year-old agent’s ‘ridiculous’ demands have forced Newcastle to investigate other targets, with Paris Saint-Germain now also interested.
