A newborn baby is fighting for his life after being abandoned on a Texas sidewalk during freezing temperatures.
The boy was discovered by a 34-year-old man on a sidewalk near the San Antonio Fire Department Station #1 at 515 N Cherry St around 3 a.m. on Jan. 21, according to the San Antonio Express News.
“The newborn was inside a basket wrapped in a towel breathing weakly with the umbilical cord still attached,” authorities said in the report.
The Good Samaritan delivered the baby to the San Antonio Police Department’s bicycle patrol substation in the 400 block of East Commerce Street.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition.
Authorities have identified women ages 28 and 27 as suspects. So far they are being questioned and no arrests have been made.
According to the weather channelTemperatures had dropped to 28 degrees Fahrenheit and northerly winds were between 13 and 15 miles per hour when the baby was found.
Since the incident, San Antonio officials have reminded locals of Safe Haven laws that allow parents to anonymously deliver unharmed babies to designated safe locations without fear of prosecution.

Since launching in 2016, Safe Haven Baby Boxes have provided parents with a discreet and safe option to deliver their newborns.
The nonprofit’s policy states that any parent can leave a baby younger than 30 days old without legal consequences.
Medical grade boxes are installed on the exterior wall of a medical building.
An exterior door closes automatically when a newborn is placed inside, and a medical staff member opens an interior door to secure the baby.
The boxes are available in more than a dozen states. Since 2017, 52 babies have been delivered to the organization’s baby boxes.
“SAP Police would like to remind anyone who feels they cannot care for a newborn that they can take them to a designated safe place without asking questions,” police said in a statement.
Data from December 2024 showed an increase in the number of newborn babies found abandoned in Texas, which has since raised urgent questions about women’s reproductive health.

In Texas, the law makes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest when it comes to abortion; However, the state has one of the highest birth rates in the country.
The southwestern state currently ranks second-to-last in women’s reproductive health and care, according to the Commonwealth Fund, which supports independent research on these issues.
