A newborn baby was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after a horror house invasion in Alice Springs.

The two-month-old boy was being held by his mother when two youths allegedly broke into his home on Bokhara Street in Larapinta at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

One of the teens allegedly threatened the mother of four with a gun before he hit her, injuring both the woman and her baby.

Police allege the other teen allegedly stole the woman’s keys and wallet while assaulting her before the two fled in a vehicle.

The two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, were arrested an hour and a half later.

The mother and child were rushed to Alice Springs Hospital before the baby was flown to Adelaide to be treated for serious head injuries.

Detective Regional Crime Superintendent Paul Lawson described the incident as a “shocking attack”.

I’m surprised. The community is in shock. First responders are shocked, this has to stop,’ he said.

‘I would like to acknowledge the first responders, mainly Alice Springs Police, their assistance to this incident was excellent and they got the offenders very quickly off the streets, keeping the community safe from any further harm from these two .

‘Our thoughts are with the victims of this incident, their families. I can’t even think about what they’re going through.

The two teenagers will appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Thursday.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted NTPFES about the incident.
