A neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, remembered the night the little girl's corpse was discovered and said Smith walked out and started moaning.

& # 39; I heard her coming out of the house and she was crying, just moaning … like any mother would, & # 39; she said.

The woman said she found it hard to refute the guilty plea with Smith's response at night.

Another neighbor said that Smith condemned violence for the children, and would often intervene in domestic disputes that fell on the street.

& # 39; She was more of a mediator than anything and threatened to call the police if it became violent. & # 39;

Another neighbor said that Smith often brought several children to school and kindergarten to ensure that they arrived safely.

He described the granddaughter as social because she had made friends with the younger children in the nearby houses.

The victim also attended Whanganui City College.

Smith will be held in custody until he is sentenced in July.
