  • He and American Shelby McEwan underperformed in the decider, but Kerr won.

Olympic fans were left baffled by a high jumper who lunged at the last second and jumped under the bar, with some comparing his leap onto the mat to a child “running to his bed.”

Hamish Kerr was competing in the event at the Stade de France when, unsurprisingly, the bar was raised as the final heated up.

The New Zealand athlete inexplicably acted as if he had never participated in that discipline before and backed out of the jump, opting instead to jump under the bar and land on the comfortable blue mat.

Incredibly, Kerr then reacquainted herself with the event she had spent years of her life practising and overcame the height, securing a memorable gold medal for her country on the final night of athletics in Paris.

Now social media users have reacted with amusement to the bizarre incident.

One posted the clip of the funny moment and said: “When someone tells me the bar has been raised and believes in me.”

Another posted: ‘Simulation confirmed. Wrong button pressed.’

On a similar note, one user said: ‘Bro’s controller died.’

And a fourth responded: ‘That one time they made you do the things you said you did well on your resume.’

Another added: “My brother was running to his bed.”

One user pointed out that the incident would take the spotlight away from Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, who became a figure of ridicule on social media after her unique routine failed to earn any points from the judges.

They said, ‘That Australian break dancer is very happy right now.’

Surprisingly, Kerr ended up winning the field event after clearing a height of 2 meters and 36 cm.

She outjumped her American rival Shelby McEwan to claim a memorable gold medal after the American jumped the same height and the competition went to a sudden death round.

This represented a change from the conclusion of the event in Tokyo three years ago, when Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi decided to split the gold medal when the scores were tied.

The decisive round ended up being a marathon of sorts, with none of the jumpers coming close to clearing the 2m 36cm mark as they took turns trying to do so while waiting for the track events to conclude.

As the bar dropped to 2m 34cm, Kerr finally performed a gold medal-winning jump to end the long competition.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Barshim secured bronze thanks to his jump of 2m 34cm in the regulation rounds at the Stade de France this evening.
